What's Behind This

New Old Transylvania Land Company is located along the Rockcastle River nearby Skagg’s Trace. It is one of the last remaining holdouts of former North Carolina judge Richard Henderson’s 20-million acre Transylvania Land Colony purchase of 1775. NOTLCo residents pass their time making music and poetry, collecting history and cycads, and restoring trails and minds.

Our pine cabin was cool with the next season. / A short portage from home, we were deep in fall; / Summer, below, clear as a millpond lay— / That green expanse where we had dreamed all day. (Barbara Howes, "On Falling Asleep in a Mountain Cabin)
